Dame Arlene Phillips issues plea after fallout from theatre singing debate

Dame Arlene Phillips has called for change in response to Alison Hammond’s apology after she ‘made light’ of banning singing in theatres during an episode of This Morning.

Alison took to Twitter on Easter Sunday (April 9) after receiving immense backlash for comments she made on the ITV daytime show during a debate about whether it was ok for audience members to sing along at jukebox musicals while cast members perform.

The presenter – who sat alongside colleagues Dermot O’Leary and Vanessa Feltz – said at the time that she was ‘devastated’ to hear singing was not encouraged in a conversation that was branded ‘incredibly stupid’ by theatre pros after they all decided the request during a production of The Bodyguard currently playing in Manchester was over-the-top.

What followed, however, was far more than a few tweets, as police were called to Manchester’s Palace Theatre on Friday after a ‘mini riot’ broke out during that same production, with reports of two disruptive women being dragged out.

Taking to Twitter to air her views, Dame Arlene, 79, accepted Alison’s apology, but she reckons that is just the start.

‘Alison thank you for your apology but I would just like to say, you have no idea what it is really like for those performers in the shows where the songs are popular hits and certain members of the audience feel entitled to join in’, the choreographer began.

‘Performers are unsure what to do,’ argued the original Strictly Come Dancing judge.

‘They are not trained when audiences get out of control and arguing with each other. It’s so distressing.’

‘Let’s hope this behaviour stops and normality returns’, she concluded.

The former I’m A Celebrity campmate received a wealth of support, with one Twitter user hailing her ‘a voice of reason’.

‘Well done to Alison to admit she was wrong x just hope this doesn’t happen again for everyone’s sake’, another replied.

Alison’s original statement read: ‘After reflection and the comments I made on Wednesday’s show I want to apologise to anyone who I offended especially the incredibly talented theatre performers, who I have the utmost respect for.

‘I had no idea the level of disruption audiences were causing and tried to make light of the topic on Wednesday’s show, and for that I’m truly sorry.’

She added: ‘I am a great supporter of theatre and the arts and would never sing at the top of my lungs at any performance, I was wrong in what I said and I’ve given this a lot of thought over the past few days and believe I was wrong.

‘On Thursday evening I attended a performance of the GBBO the musical which I absolutely loved and gave a standing ovation, theatre is a magical experience for me and my family.’

The 48-year-old concluded: ‘I want to use my platform for good as always and want to stand up with the performers, front of house and theatre staff especially after seeing what happened at The Bodyguard in Manchester, which has made me sick to my stomach.

‘Once again I am truly sorry but trust me I will do better in the future.’

Co-presenter Dermot later chimed in with his own statement, urging those with an opinion to be certain they know the whole story.

The former X Factor host, 49, penned: ‘Could I politely urge anyone passing judgement on the clip to watch the whole interview… as I was actually arguing AGAINST people singing too loudly in theatres.’

‘Nothing but love and respect for those treading the boards,’ added the radio broadcaster.

Melania Trump breaks radio silence with ‘Happy Easter’ tweet

PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: Melania Trump, who had not been heard from since Donald’s arrest, finally broke her silence by wishing her four million followers a Happy Easter with a tweet. It is her first social media post in a month. The 52-year-old former first lady has been noticeably missing from her husband’s side since Trump’s indictment and arrest on charges of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments to the porn star, Stormy Daniels.

Since that event, Melania has vanished from the spotlight and maintained a low profile on social media until Sunday, March 9 when she took to her Twitter handle to share a simple ‘Happy Easter!’ message with a photo of a pink rose. Previously, it was revealed that Melania will support her husband despite lingering anger at him for allegedly making a hush payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels to cover up what she alleges was a one-night stand. Nevertheless, she was not there with him when Donald turned himself into police last Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to 34 criminal counts, according to Daily Mail.

Why was Melania absent from Donald’s Mar-a-Lago estate rally?

Melania was also absent from Donald’s post-arraignment speech at their Mar-a-Lago estate, where he made his first public comments after becoming the first US president to be placed under arrest. The event was attended by three of Trump’s five children – Don Jr, Eric, and Tiffany – who respectively sat next to their better halves Kimberly Guilfoyle, Lara Trump, and Michael Boulos. Besides Melania, Donald’s eldest daughter Ivanka was also absent. At the rally, the former US president gave shout out to his children saying “I have a son here [Donald Trump Jr] who has done a great job, and I have another son here [Eric Trump] who has done a great job … and Tiffany, and Ivanka. And Barron will be great someday. He is tall and he’s smart.”

However, in the speech, there was no mention of Melania, his wife of 18 years. Her absence at the rally (and Trump’s speech) sparked a wave of conspiracy theories. A source told Daily Mail that she decided to forgo the event because she is hurt and angry at the fact that allegations about her husband’s affair will make her spend the next year and a half witnessing her private life getting exposed while the New York criminal case drags on.

‘Melania lives in an ivory tower of denial’

Melania’s no-show came after she and her husband were pictured enjoying a dinner with friends at Trump’s Palm Beach resort, despite the recent news of his indictment and imminent arrest. Last week, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, a former aide of Melania, told Page Six that her glaring absence did not signify that their marriage was breaking up. “Melania lives in an ivory tower of denial,” Wolkoff said, adding that “her silence is deliberate, it is her weapon of choice and her protective armor. She knows about Donald’s affairs, she knows everything. But her silence is her dignity. She will stand by her husband, as she always does. I don’t think Melania is humiliated by his affairs — but she is angry.”

Online-only Riduna Radio gives Alderney a choice

The new, internet-only station is to be based at the former butcher’s shop at 4, Victoria Street and will be a commercial broadcaster staffed entirely by volunteers.

There will be a team of about a dozen presenters, many of whom have experience of presenting, having previously appeared on Quay FM, which will continue to broadcast on 107.1 FM.

‘We believe there is room for two stations in Alderney,’ said Riduna Radio station manager Ian Taylor.

‘All our presenters are much loved and we believe there is plenty of demand.’

Presenters will include Robert ‘Dougal’ Bohan, who will take on the weekend breakfast show, and Nic West, Jenny Rowley, Chris Harris, Annie Burgess, Bev Hope-Smith, Jo Jordan and Mr Taylor.

The station will also broadcast the Gillham Gold show by Tony Gillham.

The new service will be live-streamed on the internet but will not be broadcast on AM or FM frequencies or on DAB.

Ahead of its launch at the end of May, the new station will be approaching advertisers on the island and is taking steps to include as many islanders as possible in the new venture.

‘Alderney residents will have the opportunity to buy shares in the station and truly become part of the Riduna Radio family,’ Mr Taylor said.

In terms of the station’s target demographic, Mr Taylor said an all-inclusive approach was being taken.

‘We made the decision right at the beginning to make Riduna Radio a station for all age groups, with a particular emphasis on attracting a younger audience with specialist shows including a School’s Out hour,’ he said.

Quay FM news and compliance officer Debbie Lewis welcomed the rival.

‘It’s great,’ she said. ‘We wish them well. It means more diversity and more choice for islanders. It’s really a matter of where people feel more comfortable. We’re always here.’

The FM station would continue to broadcast Alderney States meetings and Alderney Week events, she said, which would be particularly useful for those who prefer to listen to radio on FM.

Quay FM’s current licence, which it will be looking to renew, runs until 2025.

Alderney States member Alex Snowdon, who was involved in trying to settle a disagreement between Quay FM and some of its presenters last year, said he was glad to hear of Riduna Radio’s imminent arrival.

‘Hopefully, the more community radio stations we have – and other, written media – the more benefit there will be to the island,’ he said.

‘They’re setting up in a good location in the heart of St Anne’s and I wish them all the best.’
