Here comes the internet that spreads through light

It has been more than a decade since people started hearing about Li-Fi (“Light Fidelity”) technology. Li-Fi promises to be a revolutionary technology for high-speed data communications. Recently standardized as "802.11bb," this technology is not entirely intended to replace the Wi-Fi standard.

Li-Fi relies on the use of common local LEDs to allow data transmission. With speeds up to 224Gbps, Li-Fi is 100 times faster than the fastest Wi-Fi, WiGig, which operates in the 60GHz frequency band and can reach a maximum data transfer rate of 7Gbps.

Moreover, the rate per square meter or area data rate for Li-Fi can be 1000 times higher than the area data rate for WiFi.

Thus Li-Fi is a wireless optical networking technology that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to transmit data. It uses visible light communications (VLC) instead of "traditional" radio frequency (RF) spectrum. With the visible light spectrum 1,000 times larger than the 300GHz, microwave, and millimeter wave radio spectrum, it's just a huge untapped resource.

Compared to current technologies that use radio frequencies or RF, the speed and stability of Li-Fi technology is not affected much by interference. In fact, the more light the room has, the faster your connection will be. The reason behind this is that unlike radio waves that use unlicensed radio spectrum in the 5 gigahertz (GHz) band, Li-Fi technology operates in a spectrum 10,000 times larger than radio waves.
