New Delhi: The census exercise, which has been postponed indefinitely due to the pandemic, is unlikely to take place before the next Lok Sabha elections due in April-May 2024. Whenever the census is conducted, 31 questions will be asked to the citizens like access to smartphone, internet, laptop, computer, car, two-wheelers, grains of main consumption. The exercise to update the Census and National Population Register (NPR) was scheduled to take place across the country from April 1 to September 30, 2020 but was postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The census work is still stalled and the government is yet to announce a new schedule.Date extended
In January, the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India informed that the date for stabilization of administrative boundaries – the creation of new districts or sub-districts – has been extended to June 30, officials said. Meanwhile, the Election Commission will start the process of revision of voter lists etc. for the next general elections. Officials further pointed out that from October onwards, there is little chance of conducting the census exercise as it is believed that the same people are to be roped in by the Election Commission and the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner. He expressed the possibility that the census work would be done only after the Lok Sabha elections.

31 questions will be asked
According to the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, 31 questions have been set to be asked to the citizens. These questions include whether a household has a telephone line, internet connection, mobile or smartphone, cycle, scooter or motorcycle or moped, whether they own a car, jeep or van. Citizens will also be asked about the food grains they eat at home, the main source of drinking water and light, access to toilets and their types, availability of bathing facilities, availability of kitchen and LPG/PNG connections, availability of cooking Main fuels used for radio, transistors, availability of television, etc.
